We hear about Search Engines all the time. The most popular sites on the Internet are Search Engines. But what exactly is a Search Engine? A search engine is a searchable database of website addresses. Each search engine allows you to search its database for keywords to help you find websites that have information on what you are looking for. Each engine knows about millions of websites, and although there is a lot of overlap, you should use more then one to get optimal results. Some search engines, like Yahoo, are really catalogs, where websites are categorized and organized in a topical hierarchy. Others, like AltaVista, do not attempt to categorize and display all sites that match your query. The results of a search is a webpage with a list of links to other sites that relate to your search strings. Be as specific as possible. |
