Search Tips

Not finding what you want in the Search Engines?  These tips will help you narrow your search and get more relevant information.

  • Be Specific  Search for exactly what you are looking for, use phrases or full sentences.  For example, search on "how do I install a modem in Windows XP?" This will usually give you better results then searching on just "modem Windows XP".

  • Use Special Symbols  Most engines understand the "+" and "-" symbol to add or subtract keywords.  This will ensure that you get information relevant to every word you type, an "AND" search as opposed to "OR".  For example "+Arizona +Honda +mechanic" will only give you pages with all three keywords.  And "-Arizona +Honda +mechanic" will give you pages that match "Honda" and "mechaninc" but not "Arizona"

  • Search for phrases  By using quotation marks you can specify phrases. Search on ""Windows 98 bugs"" asks for all three words in order.

Where does this work?  Most of the popular Search Engines.  Give them a try, and if the results are not what you want, there are specific instructions on each Search Engine for refining your searches.
