Internet Radio Worldwide
Are
you looking for that perfect radio station - the one
that plays all swing, all the time, or hip-hop for
breakfast?
There's a limit to how
many stations can occupy the frequencies of any locale,
but the Internet provides easy access to radio stations
from around the world, including Internet-only radio.
You can be typing in Prescott while listening to a
station from Peru!
If your Internet
connection is dialup (over the phone lines) you can
listen to some of these stations. You’ll find, however,
that it will significantly slow down the display of any
Websites you may visit while listening. It’s best to
have a high-speed connection – enabling you to get
better quality sound and to do other work on the
Internet at the same time.
Some radio sites
require specialized “players” or “plug-ins” such as
RealPlayer or WinAmp. If this is the case, just follow
the download instructions to use the plug-in.
There are numerous
directories for Internet radio stations. Try out
www.windowsmedia.com then click on “Radio.”
Here are some other
radio directories to get you started
www.radiofreeworld.com
www.radio-list.com
www.radio-locator.com
www.flip2it.com
www.radiotower.com
www.live365.com
www.shoutcast.com
has hundreds of selections – many are commercial free.
You can search by music type, from classical to funk to
country. Many of the selections are at higher “bit
rates,” up to 128Kb. These require a broadband
connection. If you are on dialup, you can limit your
search to 56Kb or less. Shoutcast requires that you
download the Winamp player.
Here's a selection of other radio sites you may want to
visit.
