Online Journals (Blogs)
One of the fastest
growing areas in Web publishing today, weblogging or "blogging"
looks like it is here to stay. Similar to a journal or
diary, a “blog” is a web page typically comprised of
short postings that are frequently added to and arranged
in order of the posting date by the writer.
The content of blogs is
as wide and varied as the Internet itself. From
bloggers posting their political and religious views to
business commentary, family information to poetry, the
topics are endless. You do need to be careful, however.
As you search for blogs that are informative, humorous
and/or helpful, there are just as many highly offensive
blogs that you may want to avoid.
If you are looking for a
place to simply view a variety of blogs at once, a blog
portal is the best place to start. There are many blog
portals. Here are a few to get you started.
www.blogger.com
www.weblogs.com
www.metafilter.com
Another way to find a
variety of blogs is to do a search with your favorite
search engine - just type in weblog or blog and see
where it takes you.
Starting your own blog.
There are thousands of
places on the Web to create your own blog. Many are
free, depending on the amount of information and
graphics you use.
Bloggers (people who
create their own blog) come from very diverse
perspectives and beliefs. You should be selective about
the site where you actually set up your blog.
The most popular place
on the Internet for setting up blogs is at
www.blogger.com. This site has simple, step-by-step
instructions and takes about two minutes to set up your
own blog.
Blogger.com has made
blogging easy, but no matter where you set your weblog
up, be sure you feel comfortable with the content of the
other bloggers on the site first by viewing some of the
other blogs hosted there. Before you know it, you will
be posting your own blogs for the world (or just your
family and friends) to read.
