 If you are looking for an answer to a particular question, searching the Internet for the answer can be very time consuming. Isn't all this technology supposed to save you time and trouble? Enter Usenet, or commonly referred to as Internet Newsgroups. Since almost the beginning of the Internet, Newsgroups have allowed people to communicate on all types of subjects -- everything from football to gardening to literature. Each group is a collection of notes, posted by people asking, and answering, questions on the topic relevant to that particular group. There are thousands of groups, some having hundreds and even thousands of messages! CommSpeed has a "full feed," giving you access to over 30,000 different groups. You can access them from a newsreader, like the ones included with Internet Explorer and Netscape.
If you are new to Internet Newsgroups, your should get familiar with the proper "netiquette", or rules for posting to each group, before posting messages. Each group has its own rules, so read through the messages to get familiar with it first. Some newsgroups are moderated by a designated person who decides which postings to post or remove. Most are unmoderated, and your postings will show up immediately. If it is moderated, give the moderator some time to read your message before it appears in the group. |
