Virus Removal
If you believe you are infected, there
are a number of ways to remove a variety of viruses. We
have outlined steps below on how to remove different
types of viruses.
“Stinger”
- McAfee recently released a great new tool for the
removal of worms from a system. Each worm is different
in the way it was programmed and in the way it infects a
computer. Most require very specific steps to completely
remove it. McAfee’s “Stinger” program finds what worm
you are infected with and performs these steps for you.
It is a great tool for the worms that a normal antivirus
scanner can not find. The downside to this program is
that it does not have an auto-update feature. You must
download a new version every time you wish to run it.
Please check out the “Ways to Protect Your System”
section to find a link to McAfee’s “Stinger”. It is
recommended you run “Stinger” before running any other
scanner.
Antivirus Software
- The first thing someone thinks of when they are
infected with a virus is “run the antivirus scan”. While
this is a great way to remove a virus (obviously), it
does not always work. There are worms that infiltrate a
system and disguise themselves from antivirus software
or compromise the scanner completely. Even so, it is a
good idea to run a virus scan when you believe you are
infected. There are also great online virus scanners
that will scan your system from the web. Please see the
“Ways to Protect Your System” section for a list of
antivirus scanners.
Spyware Scanners
- There are many different scanners that can be found
online to remove spyware. Please look in our “Ways to
Protect Your System” section for different links. Also,
Microsoft has written an informative article on how
to determine if you have spyware and what steps you need
to take to remove it.
Computer Technicians
- A great, although somewhat costly, alternative to
removing viruses yourself is to take it to a
professional. Computer shops can be found in almost
every city and are very well equipped to remove all
sorts of varieties of viruses, worms, and spyware. Also,
CommSpeed has knowledgeable service technicians on hand
that will be happy to come out to your home for a
nominal fee that will be charged to your CommSpeed bill.
